Key Lime Pie Recipe

Updated on August 28th, 2025

Key lime pie is one of those classic desserts that proves how simple ingredients can create something truly delicious. The filling is made with just egg yolks, sweetened condensed milk, and lime juice, which come together to make a smooth and tangy custard-like center. Using a store-bought graham cracker crust makes it even easier, so most of the work is just mixing and baking. Topped with a swirl of whipped cream, this pie is creamy, refreshing, and a great dessert for warm weather or any time you’re craving something citrusy and sweet.

Why this recipe works

  • Few ingredients, big flavor: With only three main ingredients, the filling is easy to prepare but still has a rich and tangy taste that feels special.
  • Creamy and smooth texture: The egg yolks and sweetened condensed milk create a custard that sets beautifully while staying silky.
  • Bright citrus flavor: Key lime juice adds just the right amount of tartness, balancing out the sweetness from the condensed milk.
  • Quick and approachable: Using a prepared graham cracker crust cuts down on time, making this a recipe that anyone can pull off with little effort.
  • Classic appeal: This dessert has a long-standing tradition and always feels like a treat, whether it’s served after dinner or at a special gathering.

Serving suggestions

  • Top with whipped cream: A generous swirl of whipped cream adds lightness and balances the tang of the lime filling.
  • Add a garnish: Sprinkle lime zest on top or add thin lime slices for a fresh and colorful finish.
  • Pair with coffee or tea: The sweetness and citrus flavor of the pie go especially well with a hot drink after a meal.
  • Make it summer-ready: Serve chilled with fresh berries on the side for a refreshing warm-weather dessert.
  • Use for gatherings: Since it’s easy to slice and serve, this pie is perfect for parties, potlucks, or holiday dinners.
