This tater tot casserole is perfect for busy nights when you don’t have much time to cook. This casserole consists of cooked ground beef mixed with cream of chicken soup, cheddar cheese, and tater tots. The only real work that is involved in this recipe is browning the meat. You can add additional vegetables if you want such a celery, peas, or carrots. Just throw them in the fry pan with the beef and onion mixture. You can also use different types of cheeses if you want. Enjoy.

1 small onion (chopped)
1 (10 ½ ounce) can cream of chicken soup

I’ve made this casserole before and it’s very good. However, I make it with Cream of Celery soup which gives it a nice little zing.
Looks boring….Sounds boring.
This was really good. thank you for all the wonderful recipes.
I am making this Right now! Smells sooo Good.I used white Onion and shallot and Heavy Cream instead of milk. Thanks!
I add cans of veg-all to this recipe to make it an all in one dish!
@ Brandi – it may look boring, but it tastes AWESOME!!
Don’t knock it till you try it!
I also add 2 cans of mixed veggies. It’s a family
favorite!!
We used to have this for lunch in high school…freaking great only time I ate school lunch.
I make this as well but I add a packet of the lipton dry onion soup. Makes it soo yummy!
Haven’t seen this recipe in a long time. I just put it in the oven. I
made with deer sausage which I have in abundance. Hope I have found a recipe that helps me utilize it. My fingers are crossed.
My family really enjoys this dish. I’ve made several variations as well. I would recommend not using ground turkey, the flavor just doesn’t come out the same. You can use cream of mushroom soup or golden mushroom(family favorite) as well. To give it a bit more flavor adding a beef boullion cube to the mixture while browing the beef is tasty.
I’ve made this using cream of mushroom soup and my family loves it
I have always made this with Cream of Mushroom, and have tried it with sausage a few times.
I just made a variation of this last night — I cooked the ground beef with onion, garlic and taco seasoning. Added corn and black beans. Subbed enchilada sauce for the soup and used the Mexican blend shredded cheese. Even the kids ate it. 🙂
Is the casserole dish a 8×8 or 9 x 13?
erika- in the pictures I used a 9 x 13 but I cannot remember if I doubled the recipe or not. I would have both sizes on hand just in case.
I add french fried onions to this and it seems like a whole new casserole! Kids love it!
My husband loves this casserole thank you for the awesome recipe
Have made this before and super yummy! Plus, it is one of the only meals my overly picky husband will eat as leftovers! Amazing dinner, and cheap…which is always nice haha
I used cream of mushroom soup and put a lil garlic salt in the meat. Yum Yum
I made it and loved it , husband too. Thanks
My friend put this recipe in a cookbook put together by all the Navy wives from our husband’s ship. That was 37 years ago and it is still a favorite. (I bought the tater-tots just this week so I could make this)
It is easy to experiment with different soups and flavors as some others have noted.
Do the tator tots have to be thawed out?
James – No, the tater tots should still be frozen before going into the oven. I hope this helps.
Making tonight! Sounds yummy!
Quick weeknight supper. Kids love this.
My mom used to make this when we we’re kids and in my opinion it’s very bland when made the way this recipe says to. It certainly needs something to kick it up a notch.
We love this casserole, sometimes I use cream of cheddar soup ans taco seasoning.
I made a variation of this using chicken instead of ground beef. I simply cut up tenderloins into bite sized pieces, and baked them for 40 minutes, then added the soup, cheese and tots, and baked for about 10 minutes or so to melt the cheese and it was amazing!
Have made this twice now and picky eater husband ( who usually isn’t fond of casseroles) gobbled it up both times& ate seconds too. I’ve used ground turkey w/ cream of chicken soup and cream of mushroom w/ ground beef. Some people make a version of this in the crock pot but if you want crunchy tots do it the oven way! Love this and have now made it a regular monthly meal!
I make this too sometimes…but I use cream of mushroom soup and add corn and ranch style beans.
