Why Cook an Egg in the Microwave?
When you’re in the house, you may never consider the thought of trying to prepare an egg in the microwave. But certain factors may push you to see it as an option. You may want to cook something fast without the hassle of constantly watching the pot. What about Boiled Eggs?
Now, while many egg recipes can be prepared with a microwave oven, it is imperative to note that boiled eggs cannot. Boiled eggs are made by heating a raw egg such that the outer temperature cooks the insides to a solid or semi-solid form, depending on how done you want it. But raw eggs have an air pocket just at the tip of the upper edge. And when heated in a microwave, the air creates pressure in the egg that causes it to explode.
Even when you take the egg out of the oven before it explodes, you still face the risk of it explode in your face when you crack it. This condition is because the pressure is still prevalent in the egg after it’s boiled in the oven.

You can enjoy your eggs scrambled, poached, or baked by cooking them in the oven. And because you’ll eat directly from the same container you cook it with, there aren’t any extra dirty dishes left behind. The cooking time for the egg depends on the recipe you’re preparing.

Microwave Scrambled Egg
Your scrambled eggs may not come out as appealing as they would when they’re pan-fried, but they’ll taste just as good. Plus, they’ll also have a fluffy and extremely light texture when you microwave them. And you can also add your favorite extra ingredients like shredded cheese, bacon bits, or even chopped vegetables.
Ingredients
- Two large eggs
- Olive oil, extra virgin
- Salt and pepper
Directions
Grease a microwave-friendly container with the oil and crack in your eggs. Whisk it until it mixes well with the oil, then season to taste.
Drop the container in the microwave and cook at high heat for 30 seconds. Take out the bowl and stir from the edges with a fork. You can add any extra ingredients at this point you wish.
Cook in the microwave again for another 20 seconds until it’s done. If it isn’t, cook in increments of 20 seconds until the eggs are ready. In summary, it should take you at most 1 minute to thoroughly cook scrambled eggs in the microwave.
Microwave Poached Egg
Perhaps the best thing about microwaved poached eggs is you don’t get the scraggly edges as opposed to the stovetop option. Plus, it’s effortless to prepare and taste just as good as stovetop poached egg. Note, though, that you can only microwave one egg per container for this. If you want to cook more, use multiple containers and place them in at the same time.

- Distilled white vinegar

Directions
Crack the egg into a microwave-safe container and top it with enough water to cover the egg and a dash of distilled white vinegar.
Cover the container and microwave for 30 to 40 seconds, depending on how well done you want it.
Once it’s ready, remove the egg from the water and season to taste.
Microwave Baked Egg
Surprisingly, you can bake your eggs in the microwave and end up with something just as tasty as a regular oven. You can even play with the recipe by adding bacon strips, mushrooms, spring onions, cheese, or marinara if you wish. This method of microwaving eggs is very flexible and allows you to cook them the way you want to.
Ingredients
- One large egg
- Two bacon strips
- Olive oil, extra virgin
- Salt and pepper
Directions
Grease a microwave-safe container with the oil and line in the bacon strips. Crack the egg in and season.
Cover the container and microwave for 30 seconds. If it isn’t done to preference, cook in 15-second increments till it’s ready, which should be about 1 minute of total cooking time. You may note some popping sounds while it cooks, but this is expected.
