Poutine Pizza Recipe

poutine pizza
The ingredients of poutine go great on a freshly baked pizza. I came up with this idea from a poutine pizza that was on the menu at Pizza Hut in Canada recently. The sauce is a homemade gravy that gets a lot of flavor from beef broth, garlic, and ketchup. The pizza is topped off with French fries, sliced steak, and cheese curds. French fries may seem a little weird on a pizza and you may want to go easy on them. I like to use the home-style frozen French fries that you buy in the store but you can also make your own if you would prefer. This recipe is a little time consuming and I like to use a store bought pizza crust to save time. If there is any extra gravy you can use it to drizzle on top of the pizza or for dipping. If you are looking for a rather unique pizza recipe, give this one a try. Enjoy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces skirt steak
  • salt and ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1lb pizza dough
  • Gravy-
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 1 shallot (minced)
  • 1 garlic clove (minced)
  • 4 cups beef stock
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • salt and ground black pepper (to taste)
  • Other-
  • 1520 frozen French fries (or less)
  • Oil (for frying)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup white cheddar cheese curds

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. To make the gravy—Melt butter in a large deep skillet over medium heat.
  2. Once the butter has melted, whisk in the flour and cook while whisking until smooth for about 2 minutes. Add the shallot and garlic and cook until soft. Pour in the beef broth, a little at a time while whisking.
  3. Whisk in ketchup, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil while whisking.
  4. Cook until the mixture has thickened (about 6 minutes).
  5. Heat oil in a deep fryer to 375 degrees F. Add the fries and cook until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels (you can also bake them in the oven if you would prefer).
  6. Slice the steak into thin strips. Season with salt and ground black pepper. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak slices and cook while stirring occasionally until the steak has reached your desired doneness. Set aside.
  7. Roll and press the pizza crust onto a lightly greased baking sheet. Place into the oven and bake at 425 degrees F. for 7-8 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven and spread a layer of the gravy over the partially baked pizza crust. Top with a layer of mozzarella cheese. Add steak slices on top of the mozzarella and add French fries and cheese curds on top.
  9. Return to the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese has melted (the cheese curds may not be fully melted and that is fine, as long as the mozzarella is melted).
