Prime Rib Burgers Recipe

Updated on July 17th, 2025

These Prime Rib Burgers recipe bring steakhouse-inspired flavor to your grill or skillet. Made with rich prime rib patties, they’re cooked until juicy and topped with melted smoked provolone. Caramelized onions add a sweet, savory layer, while a creamy horseradish sauce gives each bite a cool and tangy finish. Served on toasted brioche buns, these burgers are a satisfying upgrade from the usual.

Why this recipe works

  • Richer meat flavor: Prime rib adds a deeper, more savory taste compared to regular ground beef.
  • Sweet and sharp toppings: Caramelized onions and horseradish cream create a balanced contrast of sweetness and tang.
  • Melty cheese finish: Smoked provolone melts beautifully and complements the beef without overpowering it.
  • Easy prep with standout results: Simple steps and basic ingredients deliver a burger that feels restaurant-worthy.

Serving suggestions

  • Go with soft buns: Brioche buns work well to soak up the juices and add a hint of sweetness.
  • Add a sidekick: Serve with fries, onion rings, or a crunchy pickle spear for a classic touch.
  • Keep it crisp: Pair with coleslaw or a fresh green salad for a lighter contrast.
  • Perfect for any casual meal: Great for weekend dinners, summer grilling, or laid-back family nights.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 Servings 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 prime rib burger patties (or 1 to 1/2 lbs ground prime rib)
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Salt and pepper
  • 4 slices smoked provolone cheese
  • Caramelized Onions-
  • 2 small onions (thinly sliced)
  • 1/2 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Small pinch of dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • Horseradish Cream-
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon horseradish
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl combine sour cream, mayonnaise, horseradish, salt, and pepper. Mix well. Place into the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Melt the butter and oil in a large sauté pan over low heat. Add in the sliced onions, and the dried thyme and cook slowly for about 20 minutes until the onions are caramelized. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Season the burger patties on both sides with salt and pepper. Heat a large skillet to medium high heat. Add the burger patties and cook, turning frequently until fully cooked (the internal temperature has reached 160 degrees F), about 5 minutes per side or more, depending on the thickness of the patties. During the last few minutes of cooking, top with a slice of provolone cheese and cook until the cheese has melted.
  4. Serve on buns with horseradish cream and caramelized onions.
