Shepherd’s Pie consists of meat and vegetables in a gravy topped with mashed potatoes that are baked in a casserole dish. This process of preparing this recipe includes browning the ground beef with the vegetables and then added various ingredients to the gravy. The gravy gets a lot of its flavor from wine, beef broth and Guinness stout. The mashed potatoes are prepared on the stovetop and everything is layered into a baking dish. The mashed potatoes are topped with cheddar cheese for even more great flavor. If you have never prepared Shepherd’s Pie before, it does require a bit of work to prepare. The best part about this recipe, the chicken is baked and not fried! The pretzels may be a little difficult to crush. A good option would be to crush them with a rolling pin. You can also use a food processor or blender to break them up into fine chunks. I used the blender to crush them but I made sure not to blend too much because I wanted some pieces of pretzel left and not just fine crumbs. Unfortunately, living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we do not have a Chick-fil-A around here so I cannot comment on how close this recipe is to the actual dish. The chicken is first marinated in a mixture of dill pickle juice and milk, then dipped in egg and milk and then breaded in a flour mixture. The chicken nuggets can be cooked in the pan or fried in the deep-fryer. They are served with a homemade honey mustard sauce which is a combination of mayonnaise, yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, and lemon juice. Enjoy.
